Chek Lap Kok Airport (Hong Kong) is both a milestone in modern architecture and a building of many superlatives – set on a 12.5 square kilometre artificial island, the gigantic airport transports more than 35 million passengers annually and is also the world’s largest airfreight airport by some distance. It is little wonder that it acquired the prestigious title of “Airport for the Millennium”.

Lord Foster’s design was founded upon both architectural and operational requirements, with a dramatic yet functionally effective solution sought. Thus expansive glazed façades were used throughout both the passenger and freight (HACTL) terminals.

Seele was extensively involved in the HACTL “Super Terminal”, providing the roof construction over the central box storage system (BSS) made from 22 “fish-shaped” steel supports and the roof construction over the container storage system (CSS) comprising 114 steel supports. The integral cladding system comprises glass/aluminium cross-section panels and vertical slats. Additionally Seele also provided several skylights and solar shading, to facilitate an optimal internal environment.

Seele also made a significant contribution to the associated Express Centre, notably six 45 m long saddle roofs made from a composite steel & glass construction and 2 associated canopies.
