In the historic centre of Shanghai stands one of Asia’s newest opera houses. Designed and constructed by Seele, in close collaboration with French architect Jean-Marie Charpentier, the building, through its many unique construction elements and temple-like shape, symbolises Heaven and Earth.

A significant design element of the Shanghai Grand Theatre is the extensive foyer glazing that hangs like an opaque veil around heart of the building. Moreover, a concave dome with a segment-like upper floor curves strikingly and opens up the impressive building towards the sky.

Seele’s opera house works were successfully delivered in accordance with a demanding construction programme, with the main point-fixed glass façade and cable support structure completed within just a few months. Extra-white glass is used throughout the project - with silk-screen printing used to meet specified solar protection requirements. The facades envelope a monumental arrangement of pillars giving the foyer the character of a temple hall, with this impression is further enhanced by a steel portal cut into the glass.
