The concept of a self-supporting whole glass construction was central to the modernization of the Augsburg Maximilian-Museum. As light and transparent a structure as possible was developed for the roof over the central courtyard, based upon the recognised physical characteristics of glass.
Seele’s innovative solution created a highly significant architectonic jewel: a wonderfully light glass roof that gives the city’s oldest museum an entirely new quality.
37m long and 14m wide the arch shaped glass roof comprises 560m2 of self-supporting glass construction, with a unique cable stabilisation system incorporating central junction elements. The specially developed stainless steel junctions act as a guide for the spiral cables and, working in conjunction with the heat-strengthened and laminated glazed elements, transfer all loads to the existing museum structure.
