The new group headquarters of Bayer AG, Leverkusen clearly demonstrates the identify-creating potential of glass & steel architecture. US architect Helmet Jahn sought to effectively juxtapose the contemporary architecture of the new administration building with the existing historic campus buildings. He successfully did so, with the new building’s design utilising transparent aesthetics and environmental sustainability to reflect both openness and the future.

The architectural focal point of the project is the glass foyer, which divides the semi-elliptical structure into two wings. The foyer has a welcoming and attractive atmosphere, with such qualities attributable to the 1250m2 suspended glass façade that facilitates optimal usage of natural light and affords interesting perspectives both internally and externally. Double-leaved façade construction is utilised for the wings, with an inner leaf made from an aluminium construction coupled with a glazed external leaf. This feature greatly enhances the energy efficiency of the building and is a crucial component of the climate concept.
